WHO Recommends Chiropractic Adjustments

Back pain is one of the most common causes of disability in the world. It affects people of all ages and has a negative impact on society, economics, and workforce. In fact, it is estimated that back pain costs the global economy over $200 billion annually in lost work productivity and healthcare costs. In the United States alone, it is estimated that up to 80% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Given the substantial impact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently commissioned researchers to make recommendations on the most effective evidence-based treatments for non-specific low back pain and provide the WHO with high-quality clinical practice guidelines. Researchers identified several interventions based on an exhaustive search of data found on MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, National Health Services Economic Evaluation Database, Health Technology Assessment Database, PEDro, the Trip Database, the Index to Chiropractic Literature and the gray literature. Based on their findings, researchers were able to develop evidence-based recommendations from high-quality clinic practice guidelines for the WHO. The researchers’ recommendations emphasized manual therapies including spinal manipulation along with education, exercise and cognitive/behavioral interventions. Chiropractic care and spinal manipulation are a safe, effective and natural treatment for not only low back pain, but most spinal pain from the low back up to the top of the neck and head. Chiropractic doctors are primary care providers, fully trained and licensed to evaluate and treat the human body.
