New research indicates calcium can reduce the risk of colorectal
cancer in women, and likely men too. Colorectal cancer is the second
leading cause of cancer deaths in the US with approximately 150,000
annually. Researchers tracked 45,000 cancer-free women for a period of
8.5 years while collecting valuable health information. Their findings
showed those taking a minimum of 800 milligrams of calcium daily
lowered their risk by 26 percent compared with those taking less than
530 milligrams daily. Those supplementing with more than 800 milligrams
daily while also consuming greater than 412 milligrams of calcium
through their diet lowered their risk by 46 percent.
